The Bodhisattva and the Bull
Artist: Allen Horstmanhof
Title: The Bodhisattva and the Bull
Materials: Welded mild steel, carved styrofoam, cellulose cement, fibreglass resin, enamel paint
This work reflects on the nature of place in the Byron Shire region. The Traditional Custodians of the land had a minimal impact on the countryside. However, when itinerant loggers arrived, they turned forests into open paddocks where cattle and dairy farmers subsequently established themselves. Then, in the 1960s and 70s, people with alternative spiritual beliefs moved into the area. The Bodhisattva and the Bull seeks to explore the philosophical dichotomy between these two disparate recent arrivals and their impact by referencing the Zen Buddhist allegory about taming of the raging inner beast as reflected in the Zen poems on the Ten Stages of Enlightenment.
