Artist: Nicole De Mestre

Title: Scraping by

Year: 2021

Materials: Each Limpet is made from found and recycled materials - metal, wood, textiles. Details and dimensions for each Limpet are outlined below. Dimensions are measured in cm and ordered Height x Width x Depth

I have collected limpet shells since I was a child, and have never really contemplated their lives or why hundreds of them are regularly washed up on our beaches. Underneath their shells, limpets spend their lives licking and scraping the algae off rocks so it is fitting that these limpets are created from materials found or “scraped” from urban streets. Inspired by the cone shapes of their shells, combined with my love of basketmaking using recycled materials, these mighty limpets were born!

Nicole de Mestre is an environmental artist, who is motivated by producing something of beauty from materials that would otherwise have ended their days in a landfill site. She tries to reduce her impact on the planet and uses art to communicate her thoughts about society’s unsustainable consumer habits and living practices. She creates an eclectic range of artistic works, all linked through the use of recycled materials and found objects. Much of her process is obtaining materials and often their shapes, colour and texture determine the final work.
