Artist: Carla Gottgens

Title: Riot

Year: 2023

Materials:

Dimensions: 17 feathers in total. Ranging from 140cm H to 180cm H

Riot celebrates the black cockatoo or “Glossies” as they are referred to in

Brunswick Heads. The Glossies are known for their raucous behaviour and their loud

boisterous playfulness. Each feather is topped with a reflective smoky grey “eye”

designed to reflect our own silliness and social activity, allowing us to catch a glimpse

of ourselves in the behaviour of the Glossies.

Riot encourages you to play within it, mimicking the red tailed black cockatoos that call Brunswick Heads their home. A threatened species in many other places in Australia, and we are lucky to have a small flock who live in Brunswick Heads. Their behaviour as they fly with reckless abandon throughout the trees can only be admired.

This version of Riot, 2023 was originally installed and exhibited in Ephemera 2023 and acquired by Townsville City Council as the Ephemera 2023 Acquisitive Prize

Winner. A different version of Riot has been created by Carla for acquisition by Townsville City Council, who have kindly given permission for the original work to be exhibited in this year's Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk; and as such Riot can be included in prize categories may also be sold individually or in groups.

Please note that prices listed do not include shipping. Artworks may be collected in person - you will be contacted by BNSW once you have made your purchase to arrange pick up. If you require shipping, please contact us to arrange a quote.
