2024 LOCAL SCHOOLS PROGRAMS
BNSW COMMUNITY COLLABORATION with
BRUNSWICK HEADS PRIMARY SCHOOL
MULLUMBIMBY HIGH SCHOOL
As part of the 2024 Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk program we again invited Brunswick Primary School students, staff and families to have the opportunity to work with some of the Artists in creating site-specific art installations in the landscape of Brunswick Heads, which will be a part of the Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk exhibition October 3-9th 2024.
Exhibiting Artists Sam Moss, Kassandra Bossell, Phillip Relf and Lucy Vanstone carefully guide students in fun sculptural workshops. Artists each offer a different approach to sculpture, and students learn new skills and ways to connect to nature.
These artists have been exhibiting professional for the past 20 years, and share stories with the students about their work and their relationship to their craft. The artists introduce students to a variety of materials and concepts from ephemeral art, lantern making and stencilling. The students learn about collaboration, working intuitively with materials, and discover new connections with their local environment.

LANTERN MAKING with Phil Relf
Phil takes students on a wonderous look into lantern making. Working with cane and paper Phil shows the students how to create a large paper Osprey bird, referencing the birds in our environment. The students work collaboratively and come together in celebration with a community Lantern Walk. Phil also supplies lantern kits that will be available to purchase for students and families to construct independently and be showcased as part of the lantern parade in October.
PORCELAIN BIRDS with Lucy Vanstone
Lucy guides students to create their own porcelain clay bird which become part of an installation in the landscape of Brunswick Heads. Students learn ceramic techniques whilst connecting to their inner world and connection to self and nurturing.
EARTH PRESSINGS with Sam Moss
Students are taken on an Artmaking in Nature walk along the foreshore reserves in Brunswick Heads. They explore the sculptures along the way and press into clay a collection found natural objects from the landscape. These are then placed along the river’s edge, creating a line, a reference point, a captured moment highlighting its fragility where the water and the earth meet. Students explore the themes of ephemeral and site specific artforms.
EDGE OF EXTINCTION – Stencilling with Kassandra Bossell
Kassandra leads students in a workshop about our Native Animals, discussing the importance of their environment and learning the Bundjalung names of the animals. Students help stencil the native animal shapes onto the cement pathway from the footbridge to Rosafina’s café. Highlighting those endangered, critically endangered, and extinct native animals.
This is a such special opportunity and we love that the school communities can be a part of our creative journey, developing connections within the wider community whilst exploring and celebrating art and nature.
All artworks made as part of the school program are displayed as part of the Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk 2024.
