Roost Box for R&B Microbats
Artist: Alison Allcock
Title: Roost Box for R&B Microbats
Year: 2024
Media: Found objects
Microbats are among the most endangered animals in the world but very little is being done to protect them, perhaps because they are wrongly feared.
These beautiful creatures are pollinators, seed dispersers and insect predators, and they can consume thousands of mosquitos in a single night.
They roost in small colonies in cracks, hollows and under bark but when their habitat is destroyed they will roost in our roof spaces, eaves, woodpiles - or perhaps a bespoke microbat house, typically made with a landing pad beneath and a small aperture in the bottom.
Microbats live in a world of sound. These tiny creatures depend on sound for navigation and communication and, just as humans are recognizable by their voices, individual bats make their own unique vocal sounds.

The World Beneath Our Feet
Artist: Annie Long
Title: The World Beneath Our Feet
Year: 2023
Media: Plywood, rio bar, acrylic paint plus found leaves/sticks
Dimensions: H 50cm; W: 100cm L: 300-400cm
The World Beneath Our Feet is an installation that invites visitors to explore the intricate ecosystem beneath their feet. It focuses on the interconnected networks of mushroom mycelium and the collaborative dynamics of tree communication and resource-sharing. We have become more aware of how fungal mycelium exchange nutrients and information, mirroring the communication networks found in human societies.
This installation celebrates the beauty of cooperation, symbiosis, and interconnectedness. It hopes to inspire visitors to consider how cooperation, solidarity, and mutual support can cultivate resilience and harmony in both natural and human ecosystems.
Visitors are encouraged to imagine the networks underground by using fallen leaves to extend the hidden networks indicated by the mushrooms above ground.

Title: Snot bubbles
Year: 2024
Materials: Fabric, Poly fibre, plastic & beads
Dimensions: various, approx 240 x 250cm
A little sniffle, accompanies a weep,
Some stray pollen, droplets peek.
Cold air rushes, nostrils streak,
Droplets pour, cried the week
Sudden laughter, shoots a load,
Heavy flu, it’s green as a toad,
Crusty nuggets, from a dusty road,
Nostril dilemmas, this is my ode!
Pink Snot Bubbles… much more fun!

Saved by the Sea
Artist: Jess Poulsen
Title: Saved by the Sea
Year: 2024
Materials: salvaged blankets, packing boxes , removalist tape, seaweed, jute string
Dimensions: 300cm (H) x 500cm (W) x 200cm (L).
This work references the orange life buoys placed along the sea wall. It speaks of new ways of seeing, stepping through portals into expansive ways of working with nature to create a viable future. Made from seaweed, removalist boxes, tape, salvaged blankets from my home after the 2022 climate disaster. My family has moved 11 times since. This is the face of climate change.
It pays homage to seaweed and its role in CO2 absorption, climate warming mitigation, regenerative agriculture, as a highly nutritious food source.
This work acknowledges the traditional custodians who utilised and knew the value of seaweed for millennia.
Fun in the Sun
Artist: John Walters
Title: Fun in the Sun
Year: 2021
Materials: Chicken wire
Dimensions: varied
I have chosen to create a Lounge of Australian water dragons as they are native not only to this area, but also most of Eastern Australia.
They have long powerful limbs and claws for climbing, a long muscular laterally-compressed tail for swimming, with prominent vertebral crests.
Water dragons are social and gather in groups. They are shy by nature but readily adapt to continual human presence. The lizards are fast runners, strong climbers, and are semi-aquatic.
In ways they have similar qualities to many of our local community members. They are loved locally, and blend well into this environment.
Individual pieces of the Fun in the Sun installation may be purchased for $600 each. This work is available to purchase as an entire installation. Please contact us if you would like to purchase or commission an entire installation.
Please note that prices listed do not include shipping. Artworks may be collected in person - you will be contacted by BNSW once you have made your purchase to arrange pick up. If you require shipping, please contact us to arrange a quote.
Holding it Together (trio) II
Artist: Michelle Walker
Title: Holding it Together (trio) II
Year: 2024
Materials: Salvaged timber and metal
Dimensions: 160cm x 200cm x 450cm
Holding it Together series emerged in response to the 2022 floods and blends solid timber with sharp-edged metal seemingly spilling from an unseen interior. The works explore the uncertainty of what’s solid and the hidden aspects of internal landscapes, reflecting a heightened vulnerability and sense of exposure. Pressure to "hold it together" persists, driven by the likelihood of more frequent climate events in the future.
The artwork serves as a thought-provoking commentary on the impact climate change triggered events are having on our landscapes and communities
Please note that prices listed do not include shipping. Artworks may be collected in person - you will be contacted by BNSW once you have made your purchase to arrange pick up. If you require shipping, please contact us to arrange a quote.

Scraping By
Artist: Nicole de Mestre
Title: Scraping by
Year: 2021-2024
Materials: Found and recycled materials - metal, wood, textiles
Dimensions: variable
I have collected limpet shells since I was a child, and previously had never really contemplated their lives or why hundreds of them are regularly washed up on our beaches.
Often overlooked, limpets are the unsung heroes of the intertidal zone-one of the most extreme environments on the planet. Underneath their umbrella-like shells, limpets spend their lives licking and scraping the algae off rocks between the high and low water marks, allowing other creatures to thrive.
It is fitting that these limpets are created from materials found or “scraped” from urban streets. Inspired by the cone shapes of their shells, combined with my love of basketmaking using recycled materials, these mighty limpets were born!
Each limpet is available for sale. Prices are POA and range from $75-$1000 each. Please contact us for more information and price details.
What Lies Beneath
Artist: Nicole de Mestre
Title: What Lies Beneath
Year: 2018-2023
Materials: Recycled fan guards and cable ties
Dimensions: variable
The microscopic remains of calcified skeletons of countless tiny single-celled algae, deposited on ancient seabeds millions of years ago, bear an uncanny resemblance to discarded fan guards seen in almost every roadside pickup pile.
The ubiquitous cooling fan could be construed as an ironic take on global warming. We use fans to maintain pleasant short-term temperatures in our immediate surroundings, while at the same time we are contributing to higher long-term global temperatures through depletion of our planet’s resources.
Shamefully, all these mass-produced, inexpensive, throwaway fans are destined for landfill, adding to the ever-increasing layers that lie beneath us.

BananaKarma
Artist: Pamela Lee Brenner & Johannes Muljana
Title: BananaKarma
Year: 2022
Materials: Recycle/Reuse trolley wheels, PET, wire, paint, Aluminium, steel, and webbing
Dimensions: 450cm x 200cm x 200cm
BananaKarma is inspired by and visually based on the form of the banana flower growth, hanging and filled with the promise of abundance. The banana has become a ubiquitous cash crop in many parts of the world, where biodiversity is being replaced by the monoculture of commodity plantations. The title is a shout out for all to celebrate their place in existence and restore faith in the cyclic nature of things.

Future Remnant 2
Artist: Pamela Lee Brenner
Title: Future Remnant 2
Year: 2022
Materials: Corflute, used packaging materials, rope
Dimensions: 260cm x 450cm x 300cm
Future Remnant 2 is a work about the legacy of the present, in the future. With the world now, in many ways, at a turning point, what will remain as our legacy? Will it be a new world populated by microorganisms alongside micro plastics? Will it be a world of war or peace? Will it be a world where we leave a disastrous imprint for future generations? How fast can we paddle upstream? We are optimistic but cautiously turning around in an upside-down world.
This work is available for sale - PoA - may be sold individually, price will relate to size. Please contact us for more info if you would like to purchase.
Mates for life (White Ibis, Australia)
Artist: Sam Gowing
Title: Mates for life (White Ibis, Australia)
Year: 2024
Materials: Aluminum, rivets, welding, paint
Dimensions: 250cm x 50cm x 600cm
With its predominantly white plumage, a bare, black head, a long down-curved bill, and black legs, Threskiornis molucca is no bird of paradise, but Sam has always had a soft spot for these prehistoric-looking creatures. Known as the ‘Sacred Ibis’, the derogatory name of ‘Bin Chicken’ disturbs her. She wants us to look again at this monogamous bird, one the Egyptians saw as the god of the moon, the master of knowledge and patron of scribes, and rather than seeing it as a pest, to see it as a loyal and sincere friend, illuminating our wasteful ways.
These are to be sold as a pair, as Ibis are monogamous and mate for life.
Please note that prices listed do not include shipping. Artworks may be collected in person - you will be contacted by BNSW once you have made your purchase to arrange pick up. If you require shipping, please contact us to arrange a quote.
Heading Home
Artist: Sam Gowing
Title: Heading Home
Year: 2024
Materials: Aluminum, rivets, welding, paint
Dimensions: 270cm x 100cm x 600cm
For thousands of years people have watched the migration and return of humpback whales along this stretch of the Pacific. These magnificent mammals make a long, arduous journey along the eastern coastline, starting from their home in the Antarctic, up to the warm waters of Harvey Bay where the mothers give birth. Heading Home celebrates their return journey south, caring for their calves while imparting knowledge and feeding behaviours. The nighttime lighting evokes oceanic phosphorescence, creating a transparent and skeletal structure, hinting at the fragility of these magnificent creatures.
The whales are sold as a pair - mother and calf.

Taming Nature
Artist: Sue Davidson
Title: Taming Nature
Year: 2024
Materials: Philodendron sheathes, lillipilli branches, rafia
Dimensions: 500cm x 100cm
The human capacity and desire to control, capture and interfere with nature has long been a part of our shared history. The exploitation of raw materials to serve us and the domestication of animals to feed and clothe us has become one of the biggest problems facing the planet. Mass agriculture and farming are exponentially contributing to climate change and all of its potential disasters.
In Taming Nature, the viewer is invited to consider how the natural world has been altered and contained to suit our needs. Eighty five percent of animal life on the planet exists for human consumption, and our wild places are shrinking at an alarming rate. The Anthropocene may be nearing its natural conclusion.
Please note that prices listed do not include shipping. Artworks may be collected in person - you will be contacted by BNSW once you have made your purchase to arrange pick up. If you require shipping, please contact us to arrange a quote.
These Songs of Freedom
Artist: Sue Davidson
Title: These Songs of Freedom
Year: 2024
Materials: Philodendron sheathes, wire cages
Dimensions: 20 Individual pieces 40cm x 20cm each, installed in a 10m2 space
I grew up next to a national park on Sydney’s north shore, and I remember my friend’s mother captured and sold wild birds. She kept a cockatoo in a cage and when it screeched the other birds would come and investigate and she would lure them into her cages. It made me sad and I wish now that I had had the courage to set them free. I don’t know how many birds lost their freedom, or how many she caught, but the cruel and heartless nature of this act stayed with me.
I dedicate this work to those caged birds and animals born in captivity, who have never known untethered joy, and to all those captured birds and animals who will never again taste freedom.
Please note that prices listed do not include shipping. Artworks may be collected in person - you will be contacted by BNSW once you have made your purchase to arrange pick up. If you require shipping, please contact us to arrange a quote.
I do like to be beside the seaside
Artist: Wendy Tanner
Title: I do like to be beside the seaside
Year: 2023
Materials: pipe, ceramic tiles, glass
Dimensions: 190cm x 100cm x 35cm
This sculpture is a representation of my enduring fascination with the beauty and mystery of the ocean. Consisting of three totem poles, each distinct in its design yet harmoniously tied together by a shared sea theme, this work seeks to evoke the enchanting world that is found on our fragile coastal fringe. The mixture of glass and ceramic tiles in layers of colour reflect the undulating waves, diverse marine life, and the tranquil depths of the ocean. These totem poles invite the viewer to reflect on their own memories of being beside the sea.

Survival Kit
Artist: Willemina Villari Kortland
Title: Survival Kit
Year: 2023
Materials: 4 seedpods bags - wire, seedpods, paint
Dimensions: H160 x W60 x D20cm, H125 x W34 x D26cm
A bag is a ubiquitous item presented in every culture.
Sometimes a fashion object, but more often than not a utilitarian one.
Seed pods are in a sense also bags and they contain the essentials that makes regeneration on our planet possible as well as feed all sorts of beings.
Their sculptural beauty inspired me to create this installation.
Seed pods are natural containers for the possibility of a life. To unfold and to be nourished.

Riot SOLD OUT
Artist: Carla Gottgens
Title: Riot
Year: 2023
Materials:
Dimensions: 17 feathers in total. Ranging from 140cm H to 180cm H
Riot celebrates the black cockatoo or “Glossies” as they are referred to in
Brunswick Heads. The Glossies are known for their raucous behaviour and their loud
boisterous playfulness. Each feather is topped with a reflective smoky grey “eye”
designed to reflect our own silliness and social activity, allowing us to catch a glimpse
of ourselves in the behaviour of the Glossies.
Riot encourages you to play within it, mimicking the red tailed black cockatoos that call Brunswick Heads their home. A threatened species in many other places in Australia, and we are lucky to have a small flock who live in Brunswick Heads. Their behaviour as they fly with reckless abandon throughout the trees can only be admired.
This version of Riot, 2023 was originally installed and exhibited in Ephemera 2023 and acquired by Townsville City Council as the Ephemera 2023 Acquisitive Prize
Winner. A different version of Riot has been created by Carla for acquisition by Townsville City Council, who have kindly given permission for the original work to be exhibited in this year's Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk; and as such Riot can be included in prize categories may also be sold individually or in groups.

Holding Strong
Artist: Nickolla Clark & Rebekah Seriah Webster
Title: Holding Strong
Year: 2024
Materials: Gympie Messmate (salvaged from Lismore Botanical gardens)
Arakwal artist Nickolla Clark, woodworker Rebekah Seriah-Webster and director of BNSW Samantha Moss have been collaborating on this project since 2021. Collaborating on sculpture has the ability to talk about land and our connection to culture. Through story telling, skill sharing and understanding materials and site, we explored the interwoven connections to art nature and community. These sculptures have the ability to inform people about these lands and our connection to culture. Holding Strong references the shape of the leaves of the Banksia Serrata, emblematic of the local area which hold significance to the Arakwal peoples. Through the exploration of mark making, burnishing and the textural qualities of wood and fire which have interwoven stories about art nature community.
Nickolla Clark, Arakwal woman of the Bundjalung nation
"I live here in the beautiful Byron Shire. Learning the culture from my Nan, Elder Dulcie Nicholls, I began painting at thirteen after she showed and taught me all things about country and what it has for us.
My artwork - which predominantly involves painting and recently, screen-printing/ lino printing depicts ancestral country, journeys and connections with fine rows of dots and lines marking out the locations of sand, sea, bush country, rivers, flood plains, waterholes and ceremonial sites, alongside totems, animals and sacred sites. It is an important part of my life and identity and an expressive means for me to share the knowledge and dreamtime of my people.
As a fair skin aboriginal woman, I have a strong contributing role in sharing culture and practicing lore in my community. Aboriginal Art has been the means of storytelling for my people for thousands of years, the longest living culture in the world. I am grateful for the opportunity to express the same stories and contribute to the continuation of culture.."

A River Flow - Sounds of the Brunswick Heads River
Artist: Conrad Hamill
Title: A River Flow - Sounds of the Brunswick Heads River
Year: 2021
Material: sound installation
A River Flow follows a day in the life of the Brunswick Heads River. Throughout the soundscape, the river converses with local wildlife, birds soaring majestically in effortless circles above, the winds, the ocean mouth, and the pulse of the Brunswick Heads village - the life of the river deriving purpose from it's source and the lives it nurtures. A dance between stillness and the movement of an ever-wavering tide, the work aims to connect listeners to the sounds of their natural environment through surfacing harmonies, rhythms and melodies that often go unnoticed.
This artwork is Not for Sale. However for further enquiries about Conrad Hamill's work or for commissions please contact us.
EDGE OF EXTINCTION
Artist: Kassandra Bossell
Title: EDGE OF EXTINCTION
Year: 2024
Materials: spray paint, stencils
The Edge of Extinction is a pavement mural on the street in Brunswick Heads in which critically endangered species endemic to NSW and the region of Brunswick Heads will be stencilled in chalk on the pavement. Each species will be colour coded for extinct, critically endangered or threatened. The coloured stencil of each species go together to form a ‘river’ meandering along the path. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, arthropods, fish, molluscs and echinoderms will have their names spelled out on the pavement with chalk. It will be installed with the help of school students in an organised workshop the week before BNSW 2024 begins. Local first nations names for the animals will be displayed alongside the english names.
Three Australian species went extinct in the last decade and 1800 species are currently on the Australian critically endangered list. In the face of obsolete Australian laws, we witness no current government action to prevent the looming disappearance of hundreds of species. In the face of The Sixth Mass Extinction, the loss of habitat and species causing depleted biodiversity is a shared concern, a part of our local cultural landscape manifested and strengthened by this project. This pavement mural serves to build community by connecting the diverse residents in a creative political action crossing all divides. Created in brightly coloured water-based outdoor paints, the outcome will be an ephemeral community artwork. The Edge of Extinction will become a cultural marker for pedestrians, a memory trigger for those who participated in the project.
With strong focus on community engagement in her art practice, Kassandra has a long history of regional art projects and political art production and activism, having contributed signature art works to major political activations, protests and events. These include work with Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Get-Up, Lock the Gate and self-organised street performances using political masks and costumes.
As a community-made project, it unites participants around a pressing current issue, lending hope through awareness, embedding memory through engagement and providing a sense of local ownership through communal activism around a common theme. Such collaborative activism will appeal to the public because it focuses on local endangered organisms in nearby environments. By extension, visitors to the area will also learn about the endangered species and the local expression of care for them. This grass roots activity assembles the community through a ground-inscribing engagement to produce a sense of caring for the environment, belonging to it and doing something about it. It provokes questions about Australia’s ongoing involvement in the Climate Emergency.

HIROMI TANGO workshops in conjunction with the Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk Community
The implementation of Hiromi’s practice within the public realm holds great synergy, and there is strong potential forcommunity engagement to create value that is greater than the sum of individual project components. Nurturing communities, local businesses and other stakeholders in the overall development can be a simple way of involving, uniting and presenting the voices of Byron Shire.
Several facilitator-led workshops were held at the Wheel of Life Studio in Brunswick Heads, where a series of activations with the local community allowed for a deeper understanding of the artmaking practice of Hiromi Tango.
A recycled wire frame was donated by Hiromi which became a symbol, a seed of hope, renewal and beginnings. Participants were guided by facilitators to create hand woven petal and flower elements using colourful recycled wools and fabrics donated by Hiromi. These colourful elements were added at form a Seedling a beginning of a collaboration with the community of Brunswick Heads to celebrate and unite the local community in shared and lived cultural experiences.
We have drawn upon on existing community event that encourages community to better understand the natural world and nurturing oneself within it, learning experiences and environmental/cultural conversations.

Block Party
Artist: Mullumbimby High School and St Johns
Title: Block Party
Year: 2024
Media: Hardwood blocks, acrylic paint
The surfacing and texture of the blocks in this artwork are as unique and personal as the students that created them. Apparent differences in size, shape and detail reflect and celebrate our individuality and personal choices. As each piece is made from the same material, we are also reminded of our commonality, shared needs and basic make up. This collaboration of individual blocks, bound together and exhibited as a whole could be considered a reflection of our community and our place within it.

Mangroves are essential in stopping eroding riverbanks. Their incredibly shallow root systems still maintain their vertical stems, withstand storm surges, and in fact protect each other. Their above-ground roots slow down water flows and encourage sediment deposits that reduce coastal erosion.
