A River Flow follows a day in the life of the Brunswick Heads River. Throughout the soundscape, the river converses with local wildlife, birds soaring majestically in effortless circles above, the winds, the ocean mouth, and the pulse of the Brunswick Heads village - the life of the river deriving purpose from it's source and the lives it nurtures. A dance between stillness and the movement of an ever-wavering tide, the work aims to connect listeners to the sounds of their natural environment through surfacing harmonies, rhythms and melodies that often go unnoticed.

The increased acidity of water around coral reefs causing the destruction of the polyps in a process known as bleaching is well chronicled. I make no judgement call on that issue. But this fact began my journey down a path of speculation about all sentient beings remaining blithely unaware of the forces of change around them and carrying on as usual as things deteriorate. In this series of surreal sculptures I chose coral fish, real and imaginary, as a metaphor to illustrate the much broader point.

The Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk were fortunate to receive a CREATE NSW, grant. IKARA Celebratory Events with Byron Girls youth group created a large lantern Bloom through a series of workshops.
In keeping with IKARA’s ethos of community participation, it is essential that the designs and construction of the lanterns be done through public consultation and workshops, so as to create a greater sense of ownership as well as passing on skills within the community.

Our tidal zone is a place to reflect on the proverb Time and tide wait for no man (or woman), urging us to seize the moment and reminding us that if we miss the tide an opportunity is lost.
We can’t turn back the tide but we can manage human impact on climate before rising sea levels wash away all marks of human existence. The time for procrastination and political interest is over.

Artist Statement
Living by the river one becomes drawn into the rhythms of the tides. Whilst submerged in its cool waters I observe the riverbanks, the plants and the living species that reside amongst them.
These tides wash in and out and reveal the common grey mangrove snuggled along the edges. Their roots known as ‘Pneumatophores’ grow vertically upwards, obtaining oxygen whilst often constantly submerged under water.
Their main function is respiration.
Mangrove roots collect the silt and sediment that tides carry in and rivers carry out towards the sea. By holding the soil in place, the trees stabilize shorelines against erosion maintaining the health of the river system.

The Mob is part of a continuing series of wallaby installations I have created for outdoor events.
In this piece I am using the wallaby as a metaphor for this festival, a gathering of the like minded, celebrating this wonderful event.
Wallabies are primarily a solitary animal and are widely distributed across Australia, just like the artists and visitors to this festival. However some species are social, and sometimes come together in mobs of up to 50.
In these trying times my wallabies come together, hopefully like the artists and guests here, after a three year absence, to celebrate and bring some joy to the festivities.

How about some playful, cheeky retro fun? This Space Hoppers performance art is inspired by childhood joy and the thrill of being ambushed by street theatre. This is an energetic and bright, interactive moving installation born from memories of the 1970s. This will bring joy, delight and intrigue across the generations.
The artist, Kelly, has many special childhood memories around the little beach and the river in Brunswick Heads. Kelly’s cousin had a Space Hopper in the 70s and she always wanted one. Finally, in 2021 Kelly shares her collection of Space Hoppers in her favourite place in the world.

LOST WORLDS' SACRUM

STUDIO KITE in conjunction with the Eromanga Natural History Museum.
Studio Kite is an art services company working in the Byron Bay Hinterlands specialising in the weird and wonderful. Eromanga Museum commissioned Studio Kite to build a life-sized Titanosaur skeleton. This sculpture is a replica of a Titanosaur's sacrum. The remains were discovered in 2004 on a tributary of the famous inland river system, Cooper Creek, in the Cooper/Eromanga Basin. The Titanosaur is a plant-eating (herbivorous) sauropod dinosaur, living approximately 95-98 million years ago: Cenomanian Epoch, mid-Cretaceous Period. It is believed to have been 30 metres long and 6.5 metres high (ground to hip). This Titanosaur represents a new dinosaur species and is in the top ten largest dinosaurs in the world. The complete skeleton will be on display at the new wing of the Eromanga Natural History Museum.

This installation is a collection of sculptural elements made of ordinary, everyday
items. With over 10 years of developing ideas and creating recycled artworks for exhibition,
the design and construction of this REEF-lection sculpture began with many hundreds of hours researching, collecting and experimenting with the raw form PLASTIC. In doing so, I have learnt much about the devastating effects on our earths oceans, and in turn have drastically reduced my own consumption.
This work is designed to excite, educate and hopefully provide people a space to reflect on
their behaviour and relationship to material that they come across in their daily lives. To Re-duce, Re-use and Re-purpose before Re-cycling.
I have experimented with textures, shapes and colours to re-create coral clusters and many of
its ocean creatures, and much like the actual coral reef formations in the ocean, this work is continuing to grow with a purpose.

Sitting not standing:
Brunswick heads has always been a wonder filled place to visit.
A visit to that meeting of the waters has always let my eyes rest from the everyday visual noise of cars fences houses roads neighbors, pressing engagements and deadlines..
Brunswick heads reminds me to take time ,to slow down, to breath in the fresh ocean air and survey the absolute beauty of natures ensemble.
Inspired by this, ‘Sitting not standing’ is a series of sculptures designed to encourage people to sit and rest for just a little bit longer.
Reimagining the public places we can sit and why.
Recent shifts in public art/ installation ideas reflect broader societal changes could these ,be leading us towards healthier more inclusive public spaces.
The sculpture ‘Sitting not Standing’ attempts to present a refreshed organization of public spaces.A more ergonomic arrangement that may that allow for ‘multiple functions’ like stretching ,playing and lounging.
A large part of this design includes flexibility with mutable forms that can create ,even ,a new sense of community.
Different materials and inclines generate different social realities. They can be ‘solitary or inclusive’ exclusive or inclusive.
While seating is often ‘invisible in the landscape’ often regarded or seen as functional to sitting the sculpture ‘sitting not standing’ encourages appreciation of landscapes as they provide a viewpoint to ‘organize the scope and our scoping strategy
During the 1860s one of the first designed stationary places to sit was made of a mix of iron handles and wooden slats and was just …under relaxing.
Not really comfortable because then the thought was “you should hold your own posture not rely on the chair.
In the 20 th century ,there were experiments about the human figure and the ideal reclining positions exploring free forming ergonomics.
A new horizon was formulated but not guaranteed ,even until now, public seating has been purposefully made uncomfortable in order to deter unwanted elements.
These were known as defensive or deterrent furnishings.
Today with a shift towards more comfortable and relaxing public space, even enabling ‘splaying in public’ a posture once only allowed in the medical or residential spheres.
There is now a potential for new positions in public spaces.

A group of 15 spheres placed on the rocks along foreshore or Torakina.
The microscopic remains of calcified skeletons of countless tiny single-celled algae, deposited on ancient seabeds millions of years ago, bear an uncanny resemblance to discarded fan guards seen in almost every roadside pickup pile.
The ubiquitous cooling fan could be construed as an ironic take on global warming. We use fans to maintain pleasant short-term temperatures in our immediate surroundings, while at the same time we are contributing to higher long-term global temperatures through depletion of our planet’s resources.
Shamefully, all these mass-produced, inexpensive, throwaway fans are destined for landfill, adding to the ever-increasing layers that lie beneath us.

One of the four basic elements, Fire holds a special place in the imagination.
Fire sculptures or fire drawings, are made with combustible rope, suspended on a metal frame. When lit, they produce fiery outlines that transforms the darkness with flaming images, words or logos. Although fire sculptures require specific safety requirements the design and construction is straight forward and lends itself well to public workshops .
A moving conclusion to a lantern parade or a statement in its own right, fire sculptures can introduce a powerful element into any night time event.

With Sea Turtle Nesting Sam brings the elegance of these magnificent creatures during their nesting period, capturing the fleeting moment these Sea Turtles make their way into the dunes to find a perfect spot to lay and bury their eggs. Using translucent materials that let the sunlight illuminate their intricate internal structures, Sam also hints at the fragility of these wonderful prehistoric creatures in our world.

Sandology is one of Australia’s longest-running professional sand sculpture companies. Formed in 1998 by master sand sculptor Steve Machell.
There is a certain wonder in seeing life breathed into just sand and water.

I have collected limpet shells since I was a child, and have never really contemplated their lives or why hundreds of them are regularly washed up on our beaches. Underneath their shells, limpets spend their lives licking and scraping the algae off rocks so it is fitting that these limpets are created from materials found or “scraped” from urban streets. Inspired by the cone shapes of their shells, combined with my love of basketmaking using recycled materials, these mighty limpets were born!

The notion of 'home' usually conjures a profoundly familiar and uniquely tailored idea, however the flat sentinels of Urban Edge stand as illusions. They resemble a place of human habitation, but as an artificial construct they offer no nourishment, no belonging, no safety and no shelter. In the absence of a home with walls, human beings remain in the environment where 'home' begins and ends for every living thing.

Surfers Respect Nature highlights all of the beautiful things around us and how we can respect, preserve and enjoy them. The artworks are cheeky at times but also convey a deep respect for the environment. The artworks bring life to old surfboards that would otherwise be sent to landfill.

Native Plants: When I was young we travelled around Australia camping and identifying native plants. I was responsible for banksias, melaleucas and she-oaks. My sister had eucalyptus, Dad had hakeas and Mum had wildflowers.

Buoy oh Buoy

These ropes and fish nets were collected by Fiona Anderson from 2012-2014 along the Western Australian coast and made their way over land to Brunswick Heads and stored for 3 years in different households and studios in the Byron Shire until Fiona and her family found a place in to settle. They were rediscovered again last year and bought back together through a community weave project for the BNSW. The process led to artists unconsciously making a series of Buoys. Weavers, artists and community collaborated to create the a series of Buoys, from these discarded coastal fishing ropes and nets.
Buoys are anchored floats that serve as a navigation mark, to show reefs or other hazards in the ocean.

This work reflects on the nature of place in the Byron Shire region. The Traditional Custodians of the land had a minimal impact on the countryside. However, when itinerant loggers arrived, they turned forests into open paddocks where cattle and dairy farmers subsequently established themselves. Then, in the 1960s and 70s, people with alternative spiritual beliefs moved into the area. The Bodhisattva and the Bull seeks to explore the philosophical dichotomy between these two disparate recent arrivals and their impact by referencing the Zen Buddhist allegory about taming of the raging inner beast as reflected in the Zen poems on the Ten Stages of Enlightenment.

Within The Bubble explores the reality of recent social issues, connecting us through a shared experience of anxiety and isolation, questioning the concepts of freedom and reminding us of the importance of 'WE' from the local to the global.
Art for me enhances, challenges and raises awareness of our environment, society and its people. As a multi media artist I convey different emotions and ideas with a variety of mediums, always with an underlying consciousness of consumerism, conservation and recycling.
The concept behind this sculpture is to evoke a feeling of connection and contemplation, representing visually the emotions of anxiety and isolation that over the last 12 months we all have experienced.

Aboriginal people had an obligation to Country, believing if they cared for her, she would care for them. This system worked successfully for thousands of years.
Colonial planning practices decreed a new order introducing mapping, land grants and individual ownership. Sovereignty was never ceded.
Our artwork is a collaboration between artist Sue Davidson and Balangarra town planner Elle Davidson to invite the viewer to question their participation in this narrative.
This is our story as a mother and daughter, but also our story as a nation. A shared history that we need to come to terms with.

Goanna Rising
As clock spins faster than moon plays with tide and distance between us & nature becomes increasingly wide as our myth and meaning fall faint under the tik tok of tech.
The times we are headed for spell ruin & wreck but hidden in the undergrowth crawling through our psyche a goanna is rising to protect us from catostrophe existing in our memories in a time of natural lore. if you are quite enough to listen he will rise to the fore.
A creature painted with the markings of lands creation the image of inner strength, healing and spiritual protection. The only being strong enough to take on the serpent an inner spirit we must call on to fight our predicament. Goanna rising to those that feel the call to action that see the need to return to our primal connection to live the stories again that are written on the tide to cast aside the clock, and let the tik tok subside.

EDGE OF EXTINCTION

The Edge of Extinction is a pavement mural on the street in Brunswick Heads in which each species will be colour coded for extinct, critically endangered and threatened.
Three Australian species went extinct in the last decade and 1800 species are currently on the Australian critically endangered list. In the face of obsolete Australian laws, we witness no current government action to prevent the looming disappearance of hundreds of species.
The artist Kassandra Bossell will use numerous stencils of critically endangered species endemic to NSW and the region of Brunswick Heads specifically. Members of the public will be offered to participate in creating the mural using spray paints and stencils.
Like a murder victim at a crime scene, the trace of each species takes its place as a part of a ‘river’ meandering along the path. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, arthropods, fish, molluscs and echinoderms will have their names spelled out on the pavement with chalk.
With strong focus on community engagement in her art practice, Kassandra has a long history of regional art projects and political art production and activism, having contributed signature art works to major political activations, protests and events. These include work with Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Get-Up, Lock the Gate and self-organised street performances using political masks and costumes.
In the face of The Sixth Mass Extinction, the loss of habitat and species causing depleted biodiversity is a shared concern, a part of our local cultural landscape manifested and strengthened by this project. This pavement mural serves to build community by connecting the diverse residents in a creative political action crossing all divides.
The activity will be accessible to children, elders, differently abled and all adults The numerous schools in the local districts will be notified of the times and locations of the project so they may incorporate participation into their learning programs.
As a community-made project, it unites participants around a pressing current issue, lending hope through awareness, embedding memory through engagement and providing a sense of local ownership through communal activism around a common theme. Such collaborative activism will appeal to the public because it focuses on local endangered organisms in nearby environments. By extension, visitors to the area will also learn about the endangered species and the local expression of care for them. This grass roots activity assembles the community through a ground-inscribing engagement to produce a sense of caring for the environment, belonging to it and doing something about it. It provokes questions about Australia’s ongoing involvement in the Climate Emergency.
Created in brightly coloured water-based outdoor paints, the outcome will be an ephemeral community artwork. The Edge of Extinction will become a cultural marker for pedestrians, a memory trigger for those who participated in the project.
Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve
Forty-three threatened animal species have been recorded in and around the reserve. Humpback whales can be seen off the coast during the migration period, and the world's smallest fruit bat called common blossom, which is just 6cm long, can also be seen. Other animals include the grey-headed flying fox, wallum froglet, long-nosed potoroo and koala. Critically endangered loggerhead turtles and vulnerable green turtles sometimes nest on New Brighton Beach. Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve is also home to threatened pied oystercatchers, sooty oystercatchers and beach stone-curlews.

The work is a portrayal of a biome of plastic material with a plastic deity at the epicentre, creating a small universe made of plastic. It is a statement about the pervasiveness of plastic in our life, where it is very useful. Yet, while we worship our deities we are now more aware of a side effect unfolding. The work title also refers to geodesic domes often used for greenhouses, as well as the earth.

Dispossessed is a cry for help.
While millions of koalas used to roam in the wild, their populations have plummeted with as few as 43,000 still remaining. These iconic animals have suffered devastating population decline due to human development. Thousands of trees are bulldozed each day across Australia, and our koalas are very quickly heading towards extinction. With critical koala populations still recovering from last summer's devastating fires, they urgently need help. Six thousand koalas were killed in NSW alone during last summer's fires. On a slippery slope even before this, they urgently need help.

The hand carved and tool formed surface of the individual yet grouped panels gives a very real and weighted stance. The physical surface is carved, ground ,painted, scored, belted and sanded to reveal the inner growth ring markers and secondary yet real aging of the reclaimed Australian hardwoods.
The strong geometric carving catches sunlight forms shadow and plays with silhouette. A closer inspection reveals time faded timbers, and resins pulled to the surface, subtle color play on the eye hinting at depth of hidden information.
A vehicle with which the artist attempts to share and explore their lived experience of this country using a rudimentary form of physical mind mapping Perhaps a made up language to describe place and perspective. A made up language which beckons investigation of place. This work attempts to share a language and coordinates with which the artist personally catalogues a history of terrain, emotion, and experience.
To map experience , immortalize directions and catalogue questions for further investigation. This tableau, used to precise, remind, and store coordinates to further navigate the artists enquiry of environment. The artist attempts to quantify and document their experiences of the environment by using their own skill with contour, shape and color .Then they attempt to share it with the viewer. Do we need to describe our country using economic rationalities ,politics and a “what it can do for us attitude?”
Or can we yield to a kinder more sympathetic, more human approach.
